Remembrance Day Codebreaking Pack KS2, Cipher Lesson Years 4-6 with Answer Key
A complete, ready-to-teach Remembrance cipher lesson for Years 4, 5 and 6 (ages 8 to 11, grades 3 to 5 in the US). Pupils read a short fact file about why armies used secret codes in the First and Second World Wars, build a cut-out cipher wheel, then crack six graded challenges: shift cipher, Atbash, Morse code, an unknown shift, a grid cipher and a rail fence. The challenges end by revealing a public domain line from Laurence Binyon's poem For the Fallen (1914). A source study of a made-up censored letter, six discussion cards and a reflection page keep the focus on remembering respectfully. It suits an afternoon or a short unit, needs only scissors, a split pin and pencils, and is alcohol-free and screen-free. Fully printable on A4 or US Letter.
What's included:
- 16 pages: a cover, 1 page of teacher notes, 12 pupil pages and 2 teacher answer-key pages
