Remembrance Day Activity KS2, Codebreaking Puzzle Mission Year 5 & 6, WW2 Bletchley Park Codes with Answer Key
A calm, respectful whole-class Remembrance activity for Year 5 and Year 6 (ages 9-11, US grades 4-5). Pupils join a pretend codebreaking team inspired by the secret work done at Bletchley Park in the Second World War. They crack four coded messages, and each one reveals a fact about how we remember: the date, the two-minute silence, the red poppy and the codebreakers themselves. There are no winners and no scores. The mission ends with a quiet reflection page instead of a prize. It runs in 45 to 60 minutes with a whole class working alone or in pairs.
The ciphers are simplified classroom versions. The pack says so honestly, because real wartime codes were far more complex. This is an independent classroom resource and is not an official curriculum or exam-board product.
What's included:
- 11 printable pages, laid out for both A4 and US Letter paper
- Cover page plus 2 pages of teacher notes: a 45-minute and a 60-minute running order, a plan for the differentiation levels, sensitivity guidance, a history fact check, discussion prompts and suggested curriculum links
- Mission briefing page with a short, age-appropriate introduction to Bletchley Park
- Toolkit pages: a Caesar shift guide with a numbered alphabet and a blank strip pupils fill in, a pigpen cipher key showing all 26 symbols, and a grid code guide with worked examples
- 4 code pages: Caesar shift, pigpen cipher, grid code (row and column pairs) and a final linked transmission
- 3 levels on every code page (Support, Core, Challenge), 12 different coded messages in total. Support has printed helps and pre-filled first words. Challenge has a hidden shift and crib word, no word gaps, or a keyword grid pupils build themselves.
- Quiet reflection page with optional writing and drawing space, no right answers
- Teacher answer key listing every decoded message, shift, and coded text for quick marking, plus the keyword grid filled in
- Clean print-friendly design that works in black and white
How to use:
1. Download the file in a web browser (not an app preview) and print at 100% or Actual size. Choose A4 or US Letter to match your paper.
2. Read the teacher notes (pages 2-3) and decide on the 45-minute or 60-minute route.
3. Print pupil pages 4-10. The two toolkit pages can be shared as a class reference set.
4. Read the mission briefing together, then model the first word of Code 1 on the board.
5. Pupils choose or are given a level for each code and decode one message per page. Check against the answer key on page 11.
6. Finish with a short sharing time, then the quiet reflection page.
