If the work isn't what you asked for, we'll revise it until it is, or refund you.

A ready-to-run Gunpowder Plot escape room for KS2 history lessons. Your class becomes a group of royal investigators in autumn 1605 and must crack five linked puzzles to open the Chest of Parliament. Each puzzle uses real history skills: putting events in chronological order, reading a coded note, checking facts against a fact file, and sorting primary and secondary sources. The answer to each puzzle feeds the final lock, so teams cannot skip ahead. It works in November and also any time you teach the Stuarts, chronology or historical sources. The coded note in Puzzle 2 is invented for the game and is labelled as such; the pack does not present it as a real letter.

At a glance:

  • Who it is for: KS2 history, Years 3 to 6 (Support, Core and Stretch versions)
  • Class size: up to 30 pupils in 6 teams of 5 (works for teams of 4 to 6)
  • Run time: 45 to 60 minutes including briefing and debrief
  • Pages: 21 printable pages in A4 and US Letter
  • Format: print-ready document, not editable
  • Printing: colour recommended, works in black and white

What's included:

  • Teacher set-up guide with materials list, timings and print plan
  • Word-for-word teacher script: opening briefing, checkpoint lines and closing
  • Five linked puzzles: timeline, coded note, fact or fiction, primary and secondary sources, final lock
  • Pupil mission briefing and a one-page Fact File

  • Plenary questions with model answers and notes on curriculum links

How to use:
1. Download the file and open it in your browser or PDF reader (it is not shipped in the post).
2. Print the pupil pages for each team, and cut out the cards on the puzzle pages and the hint cards.
3. Put each puzzle in its own envelope using the labels provided.
4. Read the opening script, give each team Envelope 1 and start the clock.
5. Check answers at the teacher checkpoint, hand out the next envelope and use the hint cards when teams get stuck.
6. Finish with the closing script, plenary questions and certificates.

This is a single-lesson activity, not a full scheme of work. It supports the KS2 History programme of study for England (chronology, using evidence, historical enquiry). Handle the religious background to the Plot sensitively; guidance is in the teacher notes.
